  • Accidental Bodily Injury sustained prior to the issue date of coverage; [Not applicable in Montana or Washington]
  • Accidental Bodily Injury sustained prior to the issue date of coverage and resulting in death within 12 months of policy issue; [Only applicable in Washington]
  • Any sickness or its medical or surgical treatment including diagnosis or any bacterial infection. Sickness is defined as any illness, infection, disease, including physical or mental infirmity which is not caused by an Accidental Bodily Injury; [Not applicable in Illinois, Maryland, Vermont, or Virginia]
  • Any sickness or its medical or surgical treatment including diagnosis or any bacterial infection, except infections which result from an accidental, involuntary or unintentional ingestion of a contaminated substance. Sickness is defined as any illness, infection, disease, including physical or mental infirmity which is not caused by an Accidental Bodily Injury; [Only applicable in Illinois]
  • Any sickness or its medical or surgical treatment including diagnosis or any bacterial or viral infection not incurred due to an act or acts of terrorism or other crime committed against the insured. Sickness is defined as any illness, infection, disease, including physical or mental infirmity which is not caused by an Accidental Bodily Injury; [Only applicable in Maryland]
  • Any sickness or its medical or surgical treatment including diagnosis or any bacterial infection. Sickness is defined as any illness, infection, disease, including physical infirmity which is not caused by an Accidental Bodily Injury; [Only applicable in Vermont]
  • Sickness, means an illness, disease, condition, or disorder; [Only applicable in Virginia]
  • Suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injuries; [Not applicable in Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Missouri, or Washington]
  • Suicide (sane or insane), attempted suicide, or intentionally self-inflicted injuries; [Only applicable in Arkansas]
  • Suicide, or intentionally self-inflicted injuries, while sane or insane; [Only applicable in Alabama]
  • Suicide (sane), or intentionally self-inflicted injuries; [Only applicable in Missouri]
  • Illness, treatment or medical condition arising out of suicide (sane or insane), attempted suicide, or intentionally self-inflicted injury; [Only applicable in Washington]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is incarcerated or committing, or attempting to commit, a felony or being engaged in an illegal occupation; [Not applicable in Idaho -see Limitations below, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Utah,  Virginia or Washington]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is incarcerated or committing, or attempting to commit, a felony or being engaged in an illegal occupation or other willful criminal activity; [Only applicable in Michigan]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is committing, or attempting to commit, a felony or being engaged in an illegal occupation; [Only applicable in Louisiana or Tennessee]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is incarcerated; [Only applicable in Nevada]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is participating in a felony; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is participating in a felony; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is incarcerated or a voluntary participant committing, or attempting to commit, a felony or being engaged in an illegal occupation; [Only applicable in Utah]
  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is committing, or attempting to commit, a felony or being engaged in an illegal occupation; [Only applicable in Virginia]
  • Voluntary participation in a riot, insurrection or terrorist activity, but will not include actions taken in defense of public or private property, or actions taken seeking to maintain or restore law and order including but not limited to police officers and firemen. Participation includes, but is not limited to, promoting, inciting or conspiring in a riot. Riot includes all forms of public violence, disorder, or disturbance of the public peace; [Not applicable in District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Voluntary participation in a riot, insurrection or terrorist activity, but will not include actions taken in defense of public or private property, or actions taken seeking to maintain or restore law and order including but not limited to police officers and firemen. Participation includes, but is not limited to, promoting, inciting or conspiring in a riot. Riot means a public disturbance involving an assemblage of 5 or more persons which by tumultuous and violent conduct or the threat thereof creates grave danger of damage or injury to property or persons. An exclusion for riot shall apply in the District of Columbia only when a person willfully engages in a riot or willfully incites or urges other persons to engage in a riot; [Only applicable in District of Columbia]
  • Voluntary participation in a riot, or insurrection, but will not include actions taken in defense of public or private property, or actions taken seeking to maintain or restore law and order including but not limited to police officers and firemen. Participation includes, but is not limited to, promoting, inciting or conspiring in a riot. Riot includes all forms of public violence, disorder, or disturbance of the public peace; [Only applicable in Illinois]
  • Voluntary participation in willful criminal activity, but will not include actions taken in defense of public or private property, or actions taken seeking to maintain or restore law and order including but not limited to police officers and firemen. [Only applicable in Michigan]
  • The loss to which a contributing cause was the Insured’s commission or attempt to commit a felony; [Only applicable in Maryland]
  • Active participation in a riot, insurrection or terrorist activity, but will not include actions taken in defense of public or private property, or actions taken seeking to maintain or restore law and order including but not limited to police officers and firemen. Participation includes, but is not limited to, promoting, inciting or conspiring in a riot. Riot includes all forms of public violence, disorder, or disturbance of the public peace; [Only applicable in North Carolina]
  • Voluntary participation in a riot, insurrection, but will not include actions taken in defense of public or private property, or actions taken seeking to maintain or restore law and order including but not limited to police officers and firemen; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
  • War, declared or undeclared, or any act of war or any resistance to armed invasion or aggression, or international police action with force of arms by any country or by the United Nations or any other assembly of nations [Not applicable in Arkansas, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Virginia, or Washington]
  • War or act of war (whether declared or undeclared); or international police action with force of arms by any country or by the United Nations or any other assembly of nations; [Only applicable in Arkansas]
  • War, declared or undeclared, or any act of war or any resistance to armed invasion or aggression, or international police action with force of arms by any country or by the United Nations or any other assembly of nations; this does not include terrorism [Only applicable in North Carolina];
  • War, declared or undeclared, or any act of war; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
  • War, declared or undeclared, or any act of war or any resistance to armed invasion or aggression, or international police action with force of arms by any country or by the United Nations or any other assembly of nations, or rebellion, or insurrection against a nation or government by any military, paramilitary, or otherwise armed group; [Only applicable in Virginia]
  • Illness, treatment or medical condition arising out of war or act of war (whether declared or undeclared); participation in a felony, riot or insurrections; service in the armed forces or units auxiliary thereto; [Only applicable in Washington]
  • Accidental Bodily Injury sustained by an active duty member of an armed service or reserve as a result of a military related accident, or who are deployed at the time of the accident, or the accident is directly related to participation in military maneuvers or training exercises. (The Company will refund unearned premium while the Insured is in such active duty subject to providing proof of service.) [Not applicable in Idaho, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Accidental Bodily Injury sustained by an active duty member of an armed service or reserve as a result of a military related accident, or who are deployed at the time of the accident, or the accident is directly related to participation in military maneuvers or training exercises. (The Company will refund unearned premium, on a pro rata basis, while the Insured is in such active duty subject to providing proof of service.) [Only applicable in Idaho]
  • Accidental Bodily Injury sustained by an active duty member of an armed service or reserve as a result of a military related accident, or who are deployed at the time of the accident, or the accident is directly related to participation in military maneuvers or training exercises. (The Company will refund, on a pro rata basis, unearned premium while the Insured is an active duty member of the armed services or military reserves subject to providing proof of service.) [Only applicable in Virginia]
  • Knowing and Voluntary gas inhalation or poison voluntarily taken; [Not applicable in Connecticut, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont-see Limitations below, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Knowing and Voluntary or intentional gas inhalation or poison voluntarily taken, administered or inhaled; [Only applicable in Tennessee]
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any combination thereof; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
  • Intoxication by or being under the influence of any controlled substance or narcotic, including but not limited to prescribed medications, marijuana and hashish (as defined in the state where the accident occurred); unless administered on the advice of a physician and taken as prescribed by such physician. [Not applicable in Idaho-see Limitations below, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Intoxication by or being under the influence of any controlled substance or narcotic, including but not limited to prescribed medications, marijuana and hashish (as defined in the state where the accident occurred) while being engaged in willful criminal activity as defined by the jurisdiction where the accident occurred; [Only applicable in Michigan]
  • Voluntary consumption of drugs that are not prescribed by the insured's physician or are not used in the manner prescribed; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
  • Being under the influence of any controlled substance or narcotic, including but not limited to prescribed medications, marijuana and hashish (as defined in the state where the accident occurred); unless administered on the advice of a physician and taken as prescribed by such physician; [Only applicable in Montana, New Hampshire, or Vermont]
  • Mental or emotional disorders, alcoholism and drug addiction; Only applicable in Washington]
  • Intoxication by or being under the influence of any controlled substance or narcotic, including but not limited to prescribed medications, marijuana and hashish (where intoxication or being under the influence is noted in a death certificate, coroner's report or police report); unless administered on the advice of a physician and taken as prescribed by such physician (unless taking such substance and engaging in the activity that caused the accident would constitute a violation of the laws of the jurisdiction in which the accident occurred); [Only applicable in Oregon]
  • Participating in any illegal activity as a direct result of being under the influence of an excitant, depressant, hallucinogen, narcotic, or any other drug or intoxicant (except those used as prescribed to the Insured by a physician); [Only applicable in Utah]
  • Loss sustained or contracted in consequences of the Insured being intoxicated or under influence of any narcotic unless administered on the advice of a physician; [Only applicable in Maryland]
  • Being under the influence of alcohol or having a blood alcohol level at or above the legal limit at which it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle or motorized device (as defined in the state where the accident occurred);  [Not applicable in Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Intoxication as defined by the state where the accident occurred while being engaged in willful criminal activity; [Only applicable in Michigan]
  • Having a blood alcohol level at or above the legal limit at which it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle or motorized device (as defined in the state where the accident occurred); [Only applicable in Oregon]
  • The Company will not be liable for any loss resulting from the Insured being drunk, or under the influence of any narcotic unless taken on the advice of a physician; [Only applicable in Virginia]
  • Being a voluntary passenger (other than as a Common Carrier) in or on a motor vehicle or motorized device with a driver who is under the influence of alcohol or who has a blood alcohol level at or above the legal limit at which it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle or motorized device (as defined in the state where the accident occurred); [Not applicable in Arkansas, Michigan,  Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Being a voluntary passenger (other than as a common carrier) in or on a motor vehicle or motorized device with a driver who is intoxicated (as defined in the Michigan motor vehicle code); [Only applicable in Michigan]
  • Being a voluntary passenger (other than as a Common Carrier) in or on a motor vehicle or motorized device who has or should have reasonable belief that the vehicle is operated by a driver who is under the influence of alcohol or who has a blood alcohol level at or above the legal limit at which it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle or motorized device (as defined in the state where the accident occurred); [Only applicable in Nevada]
  • Being a voluntary passenger (other than as a Common Carrier) in or on a motor vehicle or motorized device with a driver who is under the influence of alcohol or who has a blood alcohol level at or above the legal limit at which it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle or motorized device (as defined in the state where the accident occurred) when said passenger has reasonable cause to believe the driver is intoxicated; [Only applicable in Oregon]
  • Participation in any form of aeronautics, including, but not limited to, getting in or out and on or off any aircraft, except as a fare paying passenger on a regularly scheduled flight and in a commercial, licensed aircraft provided by a Common Carrier and operated by a licensed pilot; [Not applicable in Idaho, Illinois, New Hampshire, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Participation in any form of aeronautics, for wage or profit, including, but not limited to, getting in or out and on or off any aircraft, except as a fare paying passenger on a regularly scheduled flight and in a commercial, licensed aircraft provided by a Common Carrier and operated by a licensed pilot; [Only applicable in Idaho]
  • Aviation, except as a fare-paying passenger; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
  • Illness, treatment or medical condition arising out of aviation; [Only applicable in Washington]
  • Driving or riding in an organized or scheduled race or speed test on land, sea or air, or while testing an automobile, motorcycle or vehicle on any racetrack or speedway; [Not applicable in Idaho, Illinois, New Hampshire, Utah, Vermont-see Limitations below, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Driving or riding in an organized or scheduled race or speed test on land, sea or air, or while testing an automobile, motorcycle or vehicle on any racetrack or speedway, for wage or profit; [Only applicable in Idaho]
  • Engaging in hazardous or extreme avocations such as but not limited to skin-diving, scuba-diving, hang-gliding, bungee-jumping, spelunking, jet skiing, sail-gliding, parasailing, para-kiting, mountain gliding or, sky-diving with or without a parachute (except where the Insured has to make a jump for self-preservation), ultra-light, soaring, and ballooning; [Not applicable in Alaska, Idaho-see Limitations below, Illinois, Maryland, New Hampshire, Oregon, Utah, Vermont-see Limitations below, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Engaging in hazardous or extreme avocations such as to skin-diving, scuba-diving, hang-gliding, bungee-jumping, spelunking, jet skiing, sail-gliding, parasailing, para-kiting, mountain gliding or, sky-diving with or without a parachute (except where the Insured has to make a jump for self-preservation), ultra-light, soaring, and ballooning, surfing, rock or mountain climbing, horseback riding, rodeo sports, motorized racing or speed testing of any kind (whether or not on a racetrack or speedway), driving or riding motorized vehicles for off-road use, intentionally detonating explosive or incendiary devices of any kind, handling or working with dangerous animals (if the Insured is paid to participate), non-motorized racing or speed testing (if the Insured is paid to participate), snow skiing or snowboarding (if the Insured is paid to participate), or any such other hazardous or extreme activity involving flying, falling, sailing, jumping, climbing, riding, racing, or driving if the Insured is paid to participate or otherwise occurs in a competition or professional event; [Only applicable in Alaska]
  • Engaging in hazardous or extreme avocations including skin-diving, scuba-diving, hang-gliding, bungee-jumping, spelunking, jet skiing, sail-gliding, parasailing, para-kiting, mountain gliding or, sky-diving with or without a parachute (except where the Insured has to make a jump for self-preservation), ultra-light, soaring, ballooning, surfing, rock or mountain climbing, horseback riding, rodeo sports, motorized racing or speed testing of any kind (whether or not on a racetrack or speedway), driving or riding motorized vehicles for off-road use, intentionally detonating explosive or incendiary devices of any kind, handling or working with dangerous animals (if the Insured is paid to participate), non-motorized racing or speed testing (if the Insured is paid to participate), snow skiing or snowboarding (if the Insured is paid to participate), or any such other hazardous or extreme activity involving flying, falling, sailing, jumping, climbing, riding, racing, or driving if the Insured is paid to participate or otherwise occurs in a competition or professional event; [Only Applicable in Maryland]

  • Engaging in hazardous or extreme avocations such as skin-diving, scuba-diving, hang-gliding, bungee-jumping, spelunking, jet skiing, sail-gliding, parasailing, para-kiting, mountain gliding or, sky-diving with or without a parachute (except where the Insured has to make a jump for self-preservation), ultra-light, soaring, and ballooning; [Only applicable in Washington]
  • Loss caused while riding in or on, entering into or alighting from, or being struck by a motorized vehicle not designed primarily for use on public streets and highways; or [Not applicable in Alaska, Arkansas, Illinois, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont-see Limitations below, Virginia, or Washington]
  • Loss caused while riding in or on, entering into or alighting from, or being struck by a motorized vehicle not designed primarily for use on public streets and highways when used for recreation or competition; [Only applicable in Alaska]
  • Loss caused while riding in or on, entering into or alighting from, a motorized vehicle not designed primarily for use on public street and highways; [Only applicable in Oregon]
  • Participation in any sport for pay or profit. [Not applicable in Illinois, New Hampshire, or Vermont-see Limitations below, or Washington]
  • Participating in professional sports; [Only applicable in New Hampshire]
Accidental Death Limitations

The Company shall not be liable for any loss sustained or contracted in consequence of the Insured’s Death in the following circumstances:

  • Any Accidental Bodily Injury sustained while the Insured is incarcerated or committing a felony or being engaged in an illegal occupation; [Only applicable in Idaho]
  • Intoxicants and narcotics: the insurer shall not be liable for any loss sustained or contracted in consequence of the insured's being intoxicated or under the influence of any narcotic unless administered on the advice of a physician; [Only applicable in Idaho]
  • Hazardous Activities: We shall not be liable for any loss sustained or contracted in consequence of the Insured’s Death while, for wage or profit: skydiving, hang gliding, parachuting, wing suiting, parasailing, BASE jumping, bungee jumping, climbing, free soloing, mountaineering, highlining, ballooning, rappelling, mountain/rock climbing, rodeo participation, participating in an equestrian cross country event, cliff jumping, big wave surfing, tow in surfing, cave diving, free diving, or scuba diving; [Only applicable in Idaho]

No benefits will be paid under this Policy for loss due to or directly contributed to by:

  • Knowing and Voluntary gas inhalation or poison voluntarily taken, administered or inhaled; [Only applicable in Vermont]
  • Driving or riding in an organized or scheduled race or speed test on land, sea or air, or while testing an automobile, motorcycle or vehicle on any racetrack or speedway; [Only applicable in Vermont]
  • Engaging in hazardous or extreme avocations such as but not limited to skin-diving, scuba-diving, hang-gliding, bungee-jumping, spelunking, jet skiing, sail-gliding, parasailing, para-kiting, mountain gliding or, sky-diving with or without a parachute (except where the Insured has to make a jump for self-preservation), ultra-light, soaring, and ballooning; [Only applicable in Vermont]
  • Loss caused while riding in or on, entering into or alighting from, or being struck by a motorized vehicle not designed primarily for use on public streets and highways; [Only applicable in Vermont]
  • Participation in any sport for pay or profit; [Only applicable in Vermont]
